In April 2019, when Lucas was almost 11, I had noticed that Lucas looked super skinny(his arms especially) but thought it was a growth spurt. In May 2019, our family of 5, went on a work/fun trip to Orlando with the family. On the drive there, we had to stop every 30 minutes for Lucas to go to the restroom and then he was super thirsty and couldn’t drink enough. We got super concerned and had our suspicions that he had diabetes but were hoping we were wrong. Fast forward to June 2019 to his regular well child visit. They checked his blood sugar (per our request) and his A1C was 13 and blood sugar was over their reading limit and we were immediately sent to Norton Children’s ER, where it was confirmed that he had T1D. He went into DKA (not severe but had to be put on an insulin drip) that night and was only in the ICU for 2 days thankfully. It changed our life drastically at first. I wish I could just take it away from him. It was the worst feeling in the world for him and for us. Unfortunately now, it’s a part of our lives forever. Lucas says it changed his life in what types of foods he can eat and how much. And he learned how unpredictable blood sugar can be. He has learned so much just about T1D and googles every symptom and feeling he is having. He is super aware of when he goes high and low, especially. It is a constant worry for him and us but we are getting through it day by day. Before he was diagnosed he felt tired and grumpy but didn’t know why. And he didn’t know that it wasn’t normal to feel that way. I’m so grateful we caught it when we did. Lucas is the oldest of 3 siblings. His brother and sister have an amazing person to look up to! Lucas manages everything so well and we are so thankful for that. He is a 9th grade honors student, in concert band, and the high school pep band at BCHS, and we are extremely proud of him. He is amazing!
